ZEN SHIATSU
Shiatsu: literally translated as “finger pressure,” is a form of bodywork based on Eastern traditions and principles with roots that are more than 2,300 years deep. The Eastern perspective on therapeutic bodywork is different from the traditional Western approach. While the Eastern perspective understands the anatomical parts of the human body and its physiology, it also incorporates a wider, more inclusive aspect that deals with the functional phenomena of the body as a whole. The term of the basic component of the functional phenomena is “chi”, “ki”, or “prana” according to different Eastern cultures. It is roughly translated into English as “energy”. Because this “energy” is considered the underlying force behind life as a whole, the shiatsu therapist focuses on balancing the energetic pattern in the body by working on specific energetic pathways or channels called meridians with concentration on specific acupressure points. By doing this, the body responds by eliminating physical symptoms associated with an imbalance in the energetic system.
A series of techniques which include gentle stretches, and finger, palm, and elbow pressure which is gentle but firm along the meridians on the body are incorporated in a full body or chair massage session.
Shiatsu is a simple, yet powerful tool for regaining and maintaining one’s health and especially for bringing consciousness to the body and eliminating physical symptoms.
Since Shiatsu is given through the clothing, it is suggested to wear loose, comfortable clothing with empty pockets, made of natural fibers such as cotton. (Wearing jeans is not recommended.) Bracelets, belts, necklaces, watches, earrings etc. can hinder the flow of energy during the session. Shiatsu also influences the circulatory, muscular, and lymphatic systems. Receiving Shiatsu regularly over time can help improve the immune system and bring body and mind together for a greater awareness and enjoyment of our participation in life.
